Martha Smith (1936-2026)

Martha F. Smith, 90, passed away peacefully at New London Hospital on June 23, 2026.  She was born on March 30, 1936 in Wethersfield, CT to the late Carrol and Eugenia (Call) Forristall.  Martha grew up in Wethersfield.  She attended Lasell College.  After graduating, she joined The Hartford Insurance Group where she met her future husband, Edward "Ted" Smith.  They spent most of their lives in Avon, CT. 

In 1989 they moved to Sunapee, NH where they had vacationed since 1959. They spent many winters in Sanibel Island, FL.  Martha enjoyed volunteering at numerous organizations.  She was the Avon Garden Club President, member of the Avon Women's Club, and member of the Women's Fellowship Committee at Avon Congregational Church.  Martha volunteered at The Fells and at the Renaissance Shoppe.  Later in her life, she rekindled her interest in playing cards with her friends.  This continued right up until earlier this year. 

The most important thing to Martha was her family.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her "Nonnie".  Her children and grandchildren enjoyed summers on the dock in Sunapee and walking the beaches in Sanibel in the winter.  She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Edward "Ted" Smith in 2019, son, Douglas Smith in 2023, and sister Betty and her husband Alexander "Duke" Reduker.

Surviving family members include her son, Richard Smith and wife Anne, daughter-in-law Kathleen Smith, daughter Cynthia Amatucci and her husband Michael, brother, Charles "Chuck" Forristall and his wife Betty, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at The First Baptist Church, 461 Main Street, New London, NH.  Burial will be in Old Main Street Cemetery in New London, NH.
