New London, NH – Jane Ann (Sides) McSwiney died peacefully at RiverMead in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 81.

Jane Ann was born on November 25, 1943, in El Paso, Texas, to King James Sides and Annie Fern (Bickley) Sides. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in music and went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts in music from Boston University, where she met Francis Graham McSwiney, whom she married soon thereafter.

After moving to New London, Jane Ann became the music director at the First Baptist Church, where she inspired generations of singers and musicians with her joy, warmth, and passion for music. She also served as an adjunct professor at Colby-Sawyer College, working as a musical director and enriching the community with her teaching and leadership. Beyond music, Jane Ann was deeply committed to service in her town—playing a key role in projects such as the renovation of Tracy Memorial Library and supporting summer music programs that brought people together.

Jane Ann and Graham raised one son, James Bickley McSwiney, and Jane Ann instilled in him the value of serving others and treating all people with love and kindness. Her son remembers her as a gentle and nurturing mother who encouraged curiosity, creativity, and compassion, and her grandchildren felt the love and joy she shared with them.

Jane Ann was a gifted musician who played both the piano and the organ. Her music was an important part of worship services, community gatherings, weddings, and funerals, touching the lives of many people over the years. She shared her talent with choirs, congregations, and students, encouraging others to experience the beauty of music. While her relationship with music was layered and complex, it remained a defining thread throughout her life.

Jane Ann is predeceased by her parents, King and Annie Fern Sides, and by her brother, King James Sides, Jr. She is survived by her husband, F. Graham McSwiney; her son, J. Bickley McSwiney, and his wife, Emerald Garvey McSwiney; her beloved grandchildren, Fern Etta McSwiney and Ash Alden McSwiney; and her sister, Elizabeth Bickley Sides.

A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2026 in New London, with details to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Tracy Memorial Library, 304 Main Street, New London, NH 03257.
